AIRPLANE GAS TURBINE
ENGINE BASICS
There is
a difference of
working principal between airplane turbine
engine and reciprocating
engine. All the
function of engine,
like air intake,
compression, combustion and
exhaust, all takes
place in one
chamber of engine,
in case of reciprocating engine.
But in turbine
engine, there are
separate section in
engine itself, devoted
for each above
mentioned functions without
any interpretation.
Depending upon
compressor design, airplane gas
turbine engines are
mainly two types,
axial flow and
centrifugal flow type. In
axial flow compressor,
the engine length
is more. The
main factors influence the
design for axial flow
type engine is
air inlet and
number of compressor
stage. Main objective
of both type
of engine is ,
sufficient supply of
air, to the
combustion chamber, for
burning of fuel
air mixture and
producing engine power.
Centrifugal flow
engine picks up
inlet air, passes
the air inside
engine and pushes
out after burning
fuel air
mixture, all these
are done by
centrifugal force. But
in axial flow
engine inlet air maintain the
original direction of
air flow, and
does not loss
energy for turning, ( which is done
by centrifugal engine)
air is compressed , step by
step in same
direction. When reached
in final step, engine
gets maximum power.
Thus desired engine
power is achieved.
