WHY AIRPLANE
JET ENGINE ARE POPULAR
THEN PISTON ENGINE
Piston engine
or reciprocating engine
driven airplane are
not popular now
a days for
passenger or cargo
transport. Their use
are limited only
in the flying
clubs for initial
pilot training. Jet
engine driven airplane
are economical in
operation and time
saver for passanger.
Also they are
reliable and comfortable
for long distance
coverage.
Jet engine
powered airplane are
mainly two types,
turboprop and turbojet.
Turboprop or turbo propeller driven
airplane gives much
payload. Payload means
fuel load, which in turns
gives revenue to
airplane operators, that implies
great economy. These
turboprop airplane is
most economical in
high altitude flying.
If high
speed is concern
the turbojet engine
powered airplane is
first choice. Like
turboprop, these type
of airplane are also most economical
in high altitude. These
type airplane has
all the advantage
like turbo prop, more over they
have high speed
compare to turbo prop.
Only landing runway
length required more,
so not suitable
for small airport landing.
The fuel
used to operate
these type of
engines are called
Aviation turbine fuel (ATF),
much cheaper than gasoline, used
for piston engine
or reciprocating engine
airplane. So, fuel
is economical for
jet airplane operator. Moreover
jet engine are
monitored in cockpit
by digital screen,
and less instrumentation is
required. Piston engine airplane required
more controls
in cockpit to
adjust and constant
monitoring of temperature,
pressure data is
required.
So, these
are the basic differences
and
advantages of jet
engine powered airplane
over old days reciprocating engine (piston engine) airplane.
